What's happening at West???

There are a lot of changes at West for the beginning of the 2018 school year. First, we are getting a new principal and two new assistant principals. Third year principal Mr. Lucas Cech has been transferred to Marion Franklin and the Marion Franklin principal, Mr. Greg Costello, will be at West. Two new assistant principals are coming on board - Ms. Jenny Meade and Mr. Tai Cornute. The third assistant principal, Mr. Rodney Barrett is starting his 3rd year at West.

The previous head football coach, the offensive line coach, and defensive line coach have all taken coaching positions at other local high schools. The defensive line coach, who was also the head wrestling coach, will continue to teach at West but has taken a head wrestling coaching position at another local school.

There are also a few other staff changes that we haven't noted here. However, all of these changes will certainly affect the students at West. But we know they will perserverve and do what they need to do to succeed.

We wish all of the new administrators, staff, and coaches the best as they become aquainted to West and our Alumni Association.

The 2016 West athletic teams have had an outstanding year.
The Alumni Association is proud of all you have accomplished.

Hello! I am the head wrestling coach at Columbus West High School, and we are starting this gofundme campaign in addition to other fundraising opportunities to raise money to send my wrestlers to wrestling camp this summer.
Specifically, we want to send my wrestlers to the Jeff Jordan State Champ Camp. After speaking with one of the camp directors, we are able to get a team discount cutting the cost for each camper from $455 to $385.
For us to get this discount, we need to send at least 8 of our returning 14 wrestlers. All proceeds for this fundraiser will go directly to Jeff Jordan's State Champ Camp, LLC. For more information on our wrestling team, please feel free to visit our Facebook Page at facebook.com/groups/westhighwrestling/

The camp runs weekly most of the summer from Sunday to Thursday in Urbana Ohio and is one of the top wrestling camps in the country. For more information on the camps, visit www.jefffordanstatechampcamp.com or www.jordantrained.com.

Thanks for all your support! Every little bit helps!

Congratulations CHARLES HOLLAND on the great Columbus Dispatch article of November 27, 2013.
Central Ohio's leading scorer last season (at 24 ppg) reiterated why he did not choose to transfer to one of the more basketball 'tradition-rich' Columbus high school schools to play basketball.
Per Charles, "I'm a West Sider through and through. I live just down the street. My mom, my dad, my uncle, my grandma, my grandpa, my great aunt, everybody in my family went to West.
My dad, my uncle and my grandpa all have their pictures on the wall for being all-City or all-state, and I want to get up there, too."
Charles said he is "proud to represent this school and this community, and I'd like to make a statement so people know about us again."

The Alumni Association can't be more proud of our current student-athletes. We are also proud that one of our alums, ORLANDO MCCOY '83, has returned to West to coach the basketball team. This is his 2nd year as the West head coach.
We wish Charles Holland, Coach McCoy, and the rest of the West basketball team and coaches the best as they move forward during the 2013-2014 basketball season.
- - -

A 6'4" senior, Charles finished the basketball season with the highest scoring average
in the area for the 2nd year in a row with an average of 25.8 points a game.
Congratulations Charles!
He completed his senior year by being named to the South Division, All-City League First Team.

Charles also received All-Ohio High School Football,
special mention in December.
In March he was named to The Dispatch All-Metro Basketball Second Team.

Charles signed to play football at Tiffin (Ohio) University, receiving a full scholarship from Tiffin.

Congratulations West staff and students for earning this honor!

On Wednesday, October 16, the CEO of the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation announced a 5-year, $5 Million grant that West High is the first recipient of. Also present was the President of Columbus State Community College (CSCC), Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman, the Columbus School Board interim Superintendent Dr. Dan Good, and West Principal Mr. Jason Jackson. The announcement was made in the West High Library. Columbus TV stations and other news organizations were in attendance. The announcement was covered on the evening news, in the following day's Columbus Dispatch, and in the community papers.

A statement all West Alumni Association members can be proud of, Dr. Good started his comments by recognizing the West Alumni Association as being one of the largest and most active anywhere.

West High has been chosen as the first school to participate in this project. It is for a program called Credits Count. It will involve West teachers working hand-in-hand with CSCC teachers to develop programs for West students. When West students complete the program, they will have earned at least 12 credit hours of college credit.

For those students who participate in the program and earn the credits but who choose to not attend college, they will receive a certificate showing they have participated in the program. The certificate can be shown to a prospective employer to show the extra effort he or she made during high school.

The program starts in September 2014. Eventually four other schools will be added to and included in the program. But based on the past performance of West in the STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), they were chosen to be the first school. In the future, middle schools will also be included in the program so those students will be more prepared when they enter high school.

The program will include more testing for students to determine how ready they are for college courses with the reading, writing, and math skills they have. Remediation classes will be provided during the summer to help students during the time when they aren't in school.

Principal Johnson, the West staff, and the students are very proud to have West High chosen for this incredible recognition. They welcome the opportunity for some of the best staff and students in Columbus to show they are up to the challenge. We are confident they will show the AEP Foundation and the Columbus State staff they are capable of achieving all they present to them.

Congratulations PHILLIP ERWIN.
He received Boys Golf, All-City League, Honorable Mention honors.

Congratulations JOSE CRUZ-CRUZ and ADRIAN HATCHER for being named to the Boys Soccer, All-City League, South Division, First Team.
Congratulations ADEN ABDI and MUHAMED HASSAN for receiving Honorable Mention honors on the Boys Soccer, All-City League, South Division, Team.

Congratulations to 6'2", 180, senior - CHARLES HOLLAND for receiving All-Central District, Division II First-team offense, honors as an End.
Congratulations ADRIAN HATCHER and KENNY HOOVER for receiving All-Central District, Division II Honorable mention honors.

West High received some TLC on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Our thanks and appreciation to several who were involved in having the West Auditorium updated.

Through the help of a Columbus Schools district employee who works with the United Way of Central Ohio, Community Care Day project, a 'crew' from Columbia Gas ascended on West to paint the arm rests on the Auditorium seats.

It was a 90+ degree day in Columbus, and as all our alums remember, there is no air conditioning. All of the arm rests are now a freshly painted chocolate brown!

The crew put a lot of sweat (in several ways) in to the project. Thank you United Way and the Columbus Gas employees!

(Our thanks to West Math teacher Mr. Steven Dain for providing the photos!)

ACT Boot Camp Day in the
West High

A HUGE Thank You to our nine alumni who made generous donations to help students attend the ACT Boot Camp.
This is the first time the Camp has been held in Columbus Public Schools.
Some of the surrounding school districts have held similar classes and camps for several years.

A total of about 150 total students attended the Camp. Of that, about 60 were West students.
Some of the other Columbus schools sending students to the Camp were Linden McKinley,
Marion Franklin, Briggs, Eastmoor Academy, and Walnut Ridge.

The Camp ran from 8am to 2:30pm.

The students were given information and tips to help them achieve higher scores on the ACT Exam. They took practice tests and then reviewed the answers to see how their scores improved after learning the skills taught during the Camp.

Higher grades results in first, acceptance to college, and second - offers of more financial assistance.

The donations we received were only used to assist West students.

Congratulations to our 2013 winter sports athletes.

Congratulations to Francisco Guinonez.
Francisco made it all the way to the State Wrestling Tournament before losing in an early match.
